«Friderichsværn» of 1814 – 1854: A Battleship for Peace

When the navy terminated it’s 250 year old presence at Fredriksvern Fort in Stavern, the idea of building a replica of the Brig of War «Friderichsværn» for the bi-centennial celebration of the Norwegian constitution in 2014 presented itself.

The project will generate a post-navy use of the fort which was the main naval base in modern times and an important part of Norwegian maritime history.

«Friderichsværn» sailed as a part of a multinational fleet. Officers and crew in the Norwegian and Swedish navy used to be enemies managed to cooperate onboard.

The Foundation Orlogsbriggen Frediksvern wants to forward knowledge about how the modern North was made. Norway and Sweden took the first steps towards cooperation and peace – a peace we might take for granted today.
